7 Life Hacks For Solving Draughty Windows

Nothing lasts forever, sadly not even your double glazing, and there might well come a time when you’re sat in the living room with the family enjoying each other’s company in front of your favourite film and you suddenly feel a cold chill creeping down your neck.
It sounds like you might have a draught! There’s no need for an extreme reaction like ripping out all the windows in your home and replacing them straightaway, however. #1 – Use thicker curtains
A great (and inexpensive) way of draught-proofing your windows is simply by hanging thicker curtains up. Air will find it harder to make it into the room and you’ll save some cash at the same time. Don’t forget to use lining material as well, as this will help increase the insulation.
#2 – Window film
Have you come across this product before? You simply stick it onto your windows to seal the draughts, making your house instantly more energy efficient. Simple!
#3 – Use foam tape
If your property is older and some of your door and window frames have warped, you can fix this problem quickly by using something like foam tape. You can cut it to size and fit it around the warps so no draughts come through.
#4 – Bubble wrap
Ok, so this one won’t look particularly great but if it’s just for the winter months you can probably live with it. Simply get some bubble wrap and attach it to the window. Job done! Glass isn’t a great insulator but thanks to the little pockets of air you get in bubble wrap, you can really beef up the insulation of your windows at home. You also don’t have to use any adhesive so you won’t get any nasty streaks and stains on your window – just spray the pane of glass using a spray bottle and then put your bubble wrap on the window.
#5 – Window insulator kit
This could be really helpful since it comes with double-sided tape around the edges already, making it really easy to attach to your windows. Find one for yourself on the 3M website.
#6 – Make a draught snake
You can make these for yourself quite easily so if you’re looking for a budget option, this would be it. You can even make them out of old towels and socks, so you’ll be clearing some space at home as well! Once made, just put them around the sills of your draughty windows.
#7 – Caulk your windows
Go around your house to see if any of the caulking is old and cracked. If so, just re-caulk it to seal the cracks up, which will stop the draughts. If there are big holes and cracks, you might be better off removing the old caulk and replacing it.
