Big Freeze Set To Hit The UK!

If you’ve been enjoying all the mild temperatures that this winter has seen thus far, you’re going to be in for a bit of a shock over the next few days – according to the Met Office that is, anyway.

Forecasters have just issued a yellow warning for snow from Wednesday (January 11^th), with a cold front set to hit Scotland and Northern Ireland by then, and the rest of the country once Thursday rolls around… so now’s the time to winter-proof your house if you haven’t already done so!

Apparently, a yellow warning means that strong winds of up to 60mph could be seen, with rain showers turning to snow away from western coasts, and ice, lightning and hail all extra hazards that we should all be cautious of.

What this means is that, besides taking extra care when leaving the house and driving to work or elsewhere, you should make sure your home is able to withstand freezing temperatures and strong winds.

Research from rural insurer NFU Mutual has just revealed that the average cost of repairs because of leaks caused by frozen pipes is about £4,700, so save yourself a pretty penny by going around your house assessing any weak areas that could be improved.

For example, you could give water pipes extra lagging in order to stop them from freezing and bursting, or you could consider leaving your thermostat on at a normal setting overnight or when your home is empty to keep the building temperature above freezing. Also make sure you know where your stopcock is and how to turn it off just in case a pipe does burst.
