Transforming ‘Ugly Houses’ With George Clarke

We previously told you how surveyors had predicted 2016 was the year of improving not moving, meaning more people choosing to replace their old glazing with the best new windows Manchester has to offer, and it seems that TV interiors expert George Clarke is very much in agreement.
His new show Ugly House to Lovely House is coming to our television sets soon and he’s using his knowledge and skills to transform the ugly ducklings of last century’s architecture into beautiful modern homes.
The Telegraph found that planning applications in London rose 13 per cent last year for major improvements, and according to the newspaper, George Clarke believes that no house is a lost cause.
Windows are one of his biggest bug bears when it comes to outside aesthetics, however – and he bemoans the style choices of the interior designers and architects of yesteryear, whether it be small and pointless windows that leave the insides of homes feeling like dungeons or, his particular recurring nightmare, 1970s Tudoresque windows with fake lead piping. “Windows are like eyes on a face, so if they are wrong the whole face looks ugly,” he says.
His plan is to take elements of modern architecture to transform these homes not just into OK-looking homes, but positively beautiful ones. Cue remodelling with huge windows, gorgeous bi fold doors and orangeries that let the light flood in.
We can’t wait to see the makeovers to see what difference they make not just to the looks of these homes, but also to their value.
