Homeowners Warned About Locking Windows In Hot Weather

There’s a two-week heatwave about to hit the UK apparently so you’ll all be keen to open your doors and windows to let the heat escape. However, homeowners are being warned not to be lax about home security during hot weather as burglars will be keeping an eye out for open windows and unlocked doors at this time of year.
Figures from Lloyds Bank Insurance show that there was a 14 per cent hike in unforced burglaries in 2015 during the summer compared to the winter months, with the average claim amounting to around £1,100.
Tips from the company to help protect yourself and your family at this time of year include locking the front door when in the garden, closing windows when you’re not in the room, marking property with a UV pen so police will be more likely to trace it, installing a safe at home and fitting visible key-operated window and door locks in your property, especially on the ground floor.
Tim Downes, senior claims manager, said: “Small items left on windowsills such as jewellery, wallets and smartphones are particularly at risk along with car keys, as opportunist burglars reach in through open doors and windows to grab whatever they can.”
From Friday (August 12th), forecasters are predicting that blistering temperatures will hit the UK thanks to a Spanish plume of weather, bringing with it temperatures of 35 degrees C in some parts of the country.
