Will Your Energy Bills Climb In May?

The weather’s warming up somewhat so no doubt you’re all starting to think about turning your central heating off – but be warned… if you don’t check what energy deal you’re on at the moment, you could find that your energy bills increase from May.

Research from Gocompare.com has found that 17 fixed tariff energy deals are coming to an end on April 30^th. Of these, 11 will see customers switched onto a more expensive standard variable rate automatically. In practical terms, this means that you could see your bills climb by an average of 16 per cent (or £152).

Ben Wilson, energy spokesman for the price comparison website, said: “The spring time, and the warmer weather that comes with it, tends to be the time of the year where people start switching off their heating and stop thinking about their energy bills. While it’s easy to put your energy usage to the back of your mind when it’s at its lowest, not keeping on top of when your fixed tariff expires can be a costly mistake, with an average rise of £152 at the end of the month.”

So what can you do to help keep your bills to a minimum? Switching energy suppliers and seeking out the best deals is certainly advisable, but so is making sure your home is as energy efficient as possible.
