Conservatories: A Top Way To Add Space To Your Home

If you feel as though you never quite have enough space in your home, you might want to look into your options when it comes to home improvement projects for the new year.

Although your first thoughts might be about a loft conversion or an extension, one newspaper recently suggested that homeowners should also consider another option when it comes to adding space to their properties – conservatories or orangeries.

Gloucestershire Live pointed out that this can be a great choice for a number of reasons. For a start, fitting conservatories in Cheshire tends to be less disruptive than some of the other options for adding more space, such as a loft conversion.

It will also give you a space that can act as a transition between your garden and your home. In the winter, this can mean you’re able to enjoy your outdoor space without having to go out into the cold, and in the summer it’s a great way to encourage you to spend more time enjoying your garden.

The news provider also pointed out that it’s estimated that a conservatory can add around £15,000 to the value of your property.

If you’re not sure whether you’d prefer a conservatory or orangery, it’s worth exploring the differences between the two. Gary Jones, managing director of Gloucestershire firm Glevum, explained that the biggest difference is in the roof.

“A conservatory has over 75 per cent of the roof glazed, an orangery has less than 75 per cent – although there is a growing trend for conservatories now having a solid roof,” he said.

There is also typically more glazing around the walls in a conservatory, compared to an orangery, he added. Another reason to opt for a conservatory over an orangery is the cost, as the former tend to be a little cheaper to construct.

Because so much of a conservatory consists of glazing, they are also quicker to build and offer a lighter and more airy space.

“The choice between these options is often down to a matter of personal preference or can be influenced by what you want to use the new space for,” Mr Jones commented.

If you decide that either of these projects is a good move for your home in the new year, you’ll also need to consider how you’ll decorate this space once it’s finished. Of course, with a conservatory there may well be limited wall space to paint or paper, but you might want to bear in mind some of the top trends identified by Pinterest recently.

According to the social media network, bold patterns, including tropical prints, are proving popular among homeowners, as is the colour mustard yellow. This shade is best used as an accent to give a “colourful pop” to your space.

In a conservatory you could introduce it with some bright cushions, or even a carefully chosen piece of art to hang on the wall.

Another trend that may work well in a conservatory is a series of cacti or succulents that can take advantage of the well-lit space. Searches for cactus arrangements have climbed by 235 per cent on Pinterest this year, so it’s certainly a popular way to go.
