Why It’s Worth Adding A Conservatory To Your Home

There are a range of home improvement projects that you can undertake to add more space to your home, of which a conservatory is one.

In the past, conservatories have had a reputation for being too chilly to enjoy in the winter, which means they haven’t always been the best option if you’re looking to create additional living space that’s useable all year round.

However, things have moved on considerably, and adding conservatories to your Stockport home can now be the perfect way to extend your living space and create a light, airy room that you can use in the summer and winter.

The Derby Telegraph recently offered some tips on the best home improvement projects to consider if you’re hoping to add value to your property as well as create extra space.

At the top of the list was building a conservatory. Ash Chawla, chief executive of design and build company Duke of Design, told the newspaper that it’s important to have the funds necessary to do the work properly.

“Cheap is cheap – nothing kills the value of a property more than doing cheap work on it,” he asserted.

When it comes to a conservatory, Mr Chawla’s advice is to think carefully about the materials you’re going to use. UPVC isn’t the only option, and there are others that can create a more natural aesthetic, he stated.

“A muted, more sophisticated palette of taupe and grey-painted wooden frames camouflages itself in a natural setting, and the reflective properties of glass help it blend into the outside space more easily,” he explained.

The news provider also noted that adding a conservatory can boost the value of your home by five per cent if it’s just a conservatory, or by as much as 15 per cent if it’s included as part of a larger extension, according to figures from Virgin Money.

If you’re considering adding a conservatory to your home, you may want to take some advice from consumer rights organisation Which?. It recently highlighted some of the common issues that can crop up with new conservatories and explained how to avoid them.

The organisation surveyed people about any issues they’d had with their conservatories or orangeries in the five years since they’d had them fitted.

It found that the most common problem was a leaky roof, while faulty or jammed doors, and being too chilly were the other top complaints.

Making sure that you choose a reputable company to install your conservatory, and opt for quality materials, will help reduce the risk of any leaks appearing.

Which? also noted that, although it can be costly to integrate a conservatory into your home, this is the best way to ensure you make use of it all year round. If you’re going to go down this route, you could invest in underfloor heating, and it’s worth looking into thermally efficient glass to ensure the space stays warm in winter and cool in summer.

The organisation also advised spending a little more at the build stage to ensure all the materials you use will help improve the energy efficiency of your finished conservatory.
